Summary
ABOLIR is a defective verb: in practice only forms whose ending begins with i are normally used. In the present indicative learners mostly meet abolimos / abolís; forms like *abolo, *aboles are avoided or replaced with periphrases such as vamos a abolir.
Technical explanation
Defective pattern shared by some -ir verbs:
- Present indicative: only nosotros abolimos and vosotros abolís are used; other persons are avoided in standard usage.
- Present subjunctive: not used; speakers prefer periphrases (e.g., que se va a abolir).
- Affirmative imperative: only the vosotros form abolid is used; other persons are rare or avoided.
- Negative imperative: generally avoided in all persons; periphrastic expressions (no se debe abolir…) are preferred.
- All other tenses (preterite, imperfect, futures, compound tenses) behave like a regular -ir verb.
Book note: balbucir is also described as defective and is often replaced by balbucear in the missing present forms.
