SER is used for identity and for things we typically see as stable or defining: who someone is, what something is; origin, nationality; profession; material/composition; dates and times (typical expressions); essential characteristics.

Explicación técnica
SER es un verbo copulativo: normalmente no describe una acción, sino que une el sujeto con un atributo (adjetivo, sustantivo, complemento).
También funciona como auxiliar en la voz pasiva:
ser + participio → "La carta fue escrita (por Ana)."
Importante:
Los tiempos compuestos de ser se forman con haber + sido (no con ser).
La diferencia ser vs estar es un tema clave: ser tiende a "identidad/definición"; estar tiende a "estado/situación" (lo haremos en el siguiente modelo).
SER is a copular verb: it does not describe an action but links the subject to an attribute (adjective, noun, complement). It also works as the auxiliary in the passive voice: ser + participle (e.g. La carta fue escrita). Compound tenses of ser are formed with haber + sido. The ser vs estar distinction is key: ser tends to identity/definition; estar to state/situation.
Usos principales (con ejemplos)
- Identidad: Soy Ana. Esto es una idea buena.
- Origen/nacionalidad: Somos de España. Él es canadiense.
- Profesión/rol: Mi madre es médica. Ellos son estudiantes.
- Características: El examen es difícil. La película es interesante.
- Material: La mesa es de madera. El anillo es de oro.
- Fechas y horas: Hoy es lunes. Son las cinco.
- Voz pasiva: La puerta fue cerrada. Las cartas fueron enviadas (por el banco).
Ojo
En el pretérito indefinido, ser usa las formas de fui/fuiste/fue… (mismo patrón que ir).
En el subjuntivo imperfecto, aparecen dos variantes válidas: fuera/fuese y hubiera sido/hubiese sido. En la app mostramos la forma principal y, entre paréntesis, la alternativa.
- Indicativo: Soy profesor.
- Subjuntivo: Espero que sea verdad.
- Imperativo: (tú) Sé amable. / (tú) No seas así.
